Semana Santa en Ecuador = Holy Week in Ecuador

As you may know, it is Holy Week!  Christians around the world celebrate holy week beginning with Palm Sunday and all throughout the week leading up to Easter.  Here in Ecuador, traditions are similar to what a Christian in the U.S. may experience.  Many people attend extra daily masses, especially on Holy Thursday and a special service on Good Friday.

What's different about the celebration of Holy Week in Ecuador is the importance given to these days.  Generally, large community wide activities are planned, and many people participate in these gatherings.  It is a time for church communities to reflect and pray together.  One common tradition across many communities is the acting out of the Stations of the Cross.  As is common in many churches around the world, many faithful participate in the stations of the cross weekly throughout Lent.  In Ecuador, communities come together to act out the stations of the crosses, going from house to house or various locations for each station.  Pictured (above & below) are youth from a local youth group acting out the stations of the cross a few years ago.  Processions take over city streets and even those who might not regularly attend mass take some time out of the day to participate in these events.

Holy Week & the Easter season in Ecuador is also characterized by certain foods, traditionally only served at this time of year.  One such food is Fanesca (pictured below), a pumpkin based soup with various beans, grains and codfish or "bacalao".  It sometimes also contains plantains, eggs and other seasonings.  Many varieties specifically contain 12 different kinds of beans or grains to represent the 12 disciples.  Other traditional Easter foods included arroz con leche, humitas (prepared similarly to tamales), colada de maíz, and mashed potatoes.

Since Ecuador is predominantly Catholic, most of the country shuts down to take part.  Holy Week in Ecuador is truly something special and very powerful to experience.

Día de San Valentín

Happy Valentine's Day from everyone at Starfish! Today we'd like to share with you the Valentine's traditions in Ecuador, where the holiday is also known as Día del Amor y Amistad (Day of Love and Friendship). We asked our students for their thoughts on how the day is celebrated.

Kiara tells us: Valentine's Day is celebrated with friends and gifts are exchanged between friends, boyfriends & girlfriends, and family.

(Original Spanish: Se celebra con sus amigos y se intercambian regalos con amigos, novios, y entre familia.)

From Ariana: Here in Ecuador we celebrate friendship more than love because we feel better with our friends!

(Original Spanish: Aquí en Ecuador se celebra más la amistad que el amor porque nos sentimos mejor como amigos.)

They also shared some artwork and examples of cards exchanged on Valentine's Day.

I love you a lot because I need you and I don't know what to do.
Your love makes me well, when our love is sincere.
I will love you forever.

Valentine's Day, Day of Love and Friendship
Friends Forever

Amor (Love)
Mansedumbre (Gentleness)
Inteligencia (Intelligence)
Sabiduria (Wisdom)
Ternura (Endearment)
Amistard (Friendship)
Dignidad (Dignity)

The honesty of your love makes me happy.
Valentine's Day means giving to the person who needs a hug or
beautiful smile.

Your friendship is beautiful. You're the best friend
that I've had and the best sister that I've earned.

The love of my life is sincere. The love of my
life isn't afraid. Every time my love hugs me
I feel like I'm in the clouds. When my love hugs
me, I feel loved.

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14. On this day we give gifts of roses or other special things to those people who are special to you. This is a symbol of love to that person that you wish to make them happy.

Fiestas de Guayaquil

Starfish Scholar Lili in a traditional dress, with her classmates.
The "Fiestas de Guayaquil" celebrate the Foundation of Guayaquil every year on July 25.  Across the city, people celebrate in many ways including parades, fireworks and parties.  At many high schools, including Colegio Huancavilca where 4 of our scholars study, they also hold festivals with traditional art, music and food.  The volunteers and I had the opportunity to go and watch our Scholars in action celebrating their city!

¡Feliz Año Nuevo!

In Ecuador, it is tradition to celebrate the New Year by burning an "Año Viejo" to get rid of all the bad from last year and move into the new year with positivity.  An año viejo can take many forms - often times it is a representation of something (good or bad) that was important in the last year.  In Guasmo, our students made Spongebob Squarepants.

In Flor, they made a star to represent Starfish.

In addition, we had an año viejo representation Kung Fu Panda and Sully from Monsters, Inc. made by some of the families...

...and Cristhian "Chucho" Benitez made by the "professionals" in the center of the city.  Chucho, a professional soccer player for the Ecuadorian national team passed away this past summer unexpectedly.  He was a fan favorite and missed by all.  Here are students pay tribute to him with these awesome pictures!

May your year also be filled with positivity, and many blessings.
Happy New Year!

More Tutoring = Better Grades and More Fun!

For the month of December we decided to experiment with adding an extra day of "Refuerzo" or Tutoring in each neighborhood in response to parent suggestions during our latest round of evaluations.  So far, it's been a huge success!!

Karolayn
An extra day of tutoring means more time to dedicate the school subjects that our Scholars find difficult.  Our "Ayudantes" or employees have been busy helping students review some tough material so that the next time they have exams they're all set to get even better grades!

This has also allowed us more time for the group presentations on topics important to teens that we told you about in last week's blog.

Dayanna presenting on Effects of Drug Use
Since it's December we've also used the time to bring some Christmas joy to our classroom space too - everything pictured below is hand-made by our Starfish Scholars!!

Happy Holidays a little early from all of us at Starfish!
